Best Flooring For Bathrooms

Posted on 1st September 2015 by admin

The biggest worry for most people when considering new bathroom flooring is water damage.  In the past it was common to lay a carpet as it was a relatively cheap option and warm on bare feet, however if your bathroom is not warm and well ventilated the result is a damp, smelly carpet and bathroom.

Thankfully, today there are a wide range of choices for every budget and style of bathroom.  I will detail some options with their advantages and disadvantages to help you make the right decision for your home.

Oak parquet Karndean

Carpet

At Affordable Flooring, we would not recommend carpet for a bathroom.

Advantages

  • Cheap options are available.
  • Can be replaced regularly.

Disdvantages

  • Tends to get damp and smelly.

Wood

If you have the budget available to buy wood, then it is worth considering Karndean which can look like wood but is much easier to maintain.

Advantages

  • Looks great.
  • You may be able to protect the wood with varnish.

Disdvantages

  • Wood can handle water, after all boats have been made from wood for thousands of years, however if you don’t choose the correct type of wood it can be marked and damaged easily.
  • Can be expensive.

Tiles

Tiles are a good and popular option for bathrooms but have the drawback of being expensive to buy and install, and cold to touch.

Advantages

  • Hard wearing and long lasting.
  • Will not be water damaged.
  • Available in many sizes, styles and designs.

Disdvantages

  • An expensive option.
  • Extremely cold on bare feet in the winter if you have no under-floor heating.

Vinyl

Vinyl is a good option for bathrooms if your budget is small.  It will last a long time if cared for, won’t be damaged by water and there is a huge range to choose from so you should be able to find something that suits your style.Vinyl bathroom flooring

Advantages

  • Good quality vinyl is a very affordable option.
  • Modern vinyl is cushioned and feels great to walk on, unlike tiles.
  • Quick and easy to install.
  • Available in hundreds of colours, patterns and styles.
  • Easy to clean.

Disdvantages

  • Can get scratched, cut or damaged if not careful.
  • Damage can not usually be repaired so new vinyl for the floor will be required.

Karndean

Karndean is ideal for a bathroom.  It costs more than vinyl but will last much longer and looks fantastic.  It is very easy to look after and can look like stone, slate or even wood.

Advantages

  • Hard wearing and long lasting.
  • Will not be water damaged.
  • 10 year Guarantee from Karndean.
  • Any damage can be fixed as small sections of the flooring can be replaced.

Disdvantages

  • An expensive option.
